FEB 25, 2011 The public outcry in Wisconsin is spreading, and this Friday, Feb. 25th at 12 noon - thousands will be gathering outside the State Capital in Trenton, NJ. Local labor unions from Long Island and the region will be there, via charter buses and their own personal vehicles. Many of the members of local labor unions will be taking personal days to attend the Trenton rally. Gov. Christie in NJ is floating an idea to pass a similar law like Gov. Walker is Wisconsin - eliminating collective bargaining for public workers in NJ.
Organized labor is intent on not letting that happen. Locally, Long Island labor unions have been doing their part to join the fight. CWA Local 1108 and Local 1104 (Verizon workers in Nassau & Suffolk) are driving out to NJ Friday am, while CWA Local 1109 in Brooklyn - will have buses leaving their local. Many members of Local 1109 in Brooklyn live on Long Island. Today, thousands of CWA members in the region are wearing RED in support as well. UAW Local 259 attended the FOX Rally in NYC on Tuesday, and is attending the Press Conference on the steps of City Hall today and members of IBEW Local 1049 (National Grid workforce) wore red to work on Tuesday (photo below).
Leaders of these local unions will be available for comment upon request. Contact Kris LaGrange of UCOMM Communications for more inside baseball.
